Confidence & Trust with Horses

You don't actually need to be "braver"

This presentation was delivered by Dr Shelley Appleton at Equitana Melbourne in 2024.

The presentation provides the background to my discoveries of how your sense of confidence is connected to your sense of competence in your ability to reliably influence a horse. I like to present this as an equation:

Confidence = Competence x Trust x Time

Time is a very important factor, as it is a significant contributor to developing a sense of competence and trust through practice and repetition.

Another aspect this presentation seeks to emphasise is that a person's sense of competence and reliability can be impacted by a number of barriers and challenges. These barriers and challenges, which are unique to each individual, can cause people to struggle with confidence, even though they are trying so hard to overcome the issue.

I also explain my process and how to access the resources, books, courses, and communities I have created to help people get unstuck with horses, so they can be free to enjoy their horses and explore the equestrian world.
