It breaks down all the different aspects of hoof care for owners in easy to understand language. It introduces a lot of ideas and concepts so that you have more understanding, monitor your horse's hoof health and can have in depth conversations with your professionals about their care.

This course is not a trimming course. It is for owners that utilise hoof care practitioners but wish to know and do what they can to manage and monitor their horse's hoof health.

Besides expertly guiding you through the the equine hoof, the course is highly practical. Showing you how to do practical important things such as taking correct photographs of feet and techniques to assess and monitor balance and health. The course also includes the training and handling requirements for safe hoof handling.

  • The basics of picking and cleaning out feet, including how to train young horses and why a horse may struggle.
  • How to take repeatable photos of feet and what can be assessed with each view.
  • The basics of identifying internal anatomy, external landmarks, looking at X-rays and setting up your horse for podiatry X-rays.
  • How to assess the balance of a foot including assessing the hoof pastern axis and identifying the centre of rotation from both the solar view and the lateral view.
  • How to take and analyse slow motion video of a horse walking for hoof assessment purposes. Also includes static assessment of the conformation of the front limbs and discussion about posture.
  • Common hoof pathologies and distortions.

Kathryn Christieson (BAVBioSc, Dip EPT, RHDP) is a passionate hoofcare practitioner who has worked in the industry full time for nearly ten years. Based in Canberra, ACT her day to day work involves trimming, composite shoeing, glue on shoe application, hot shoeing and boot fitting services. She works collaboratively with veterinarians, bodyworkers and trainers to achieve the best results for clients in performance and rehabilitation. Kathryn has a commitment to education and continuous improvement. She is passionate about building community and the sharing of knowledge with as many people as possible. Along with Dr. Shelley Appleton, she hosts the podcast ‘Canter Therapy Podcast’ which has grown exponentially over the last three years, interviewing equine professionals from around the world. Kathryn's dedication to sharing her expertise shines through her teaching endeavours. For the past three years, she has been actively involved in educating Equine Science students at Charles Sturt University, where she shares information on the intricacies of farriery. In addition, Kathryn teaches workshops, educating the greater horse community about the correlation between hooves, posture and performance. Outside her professional pursuits, Kathryn dedicates her time to the art of dressage, immersing herself in lessons and clinics to continually refine her skills.
