What is New Home Syndrome?

The Impact of Stress from a Horse Moving Home

I coined this term to bring recognition, respect, and understanding to what happens to horses when they move homes. This situation involves removing them from an environment, set of routines they know, and horses they have formed connections with, and placing them somewhere completely different with new people, horses and different ways of doing things.

Any horse will be affected by this.  For some it will transient, but for others it can have dramatic ramifications on them mentally, emotionally and physically.  This is partly due to the way stress can compound and manifest in different ways.

Understanding why horses become stressed and how to strategically approach their transition to a new home is the most effective way of prevent and resolve the impact of stress initially triggered by a horse moving to a new home.

What is New Horse Syndrome?

The Human Factor

There is a human side to "New Home Syndrome" which is connected and just as significant. I have therefore coined the term "New HORSE Syndrome” and it is to bring recognition, respect, and appreciation to what can happen to many people when they get a new horse.

I am calling it a syndrome because the psychological turmoil, loss of confidence, and sense of hopelessness that can manifest in an individual connected to the event of getting a new horse is common and predictable.

Understanding how to strategically approach the transition of a horse to a new home and how to consciously build a positive relationship and partnership with them is an empowering awareness to employ.

Strategy PLUS Training Skillset Toolbox Bundle

This bundle contains both what to know and the practical skills to learn!

This bundle contains not only the strategy to prevent and resolve New Home-Horse Syndrome but also Dr Shelley Appleton's recommended horse training skills to learn how to rebuild or reboot a horses foundation training. It is the level of foundation training that can help a horse that has become stressed when they have moved home. It is also the skillset that is the most effective at building a persons confidence and ability to build a partnership with a horse.

Dr Shelley Appleton recommends starting a horse's training in the ground yard and then progressing to groundwork. Then taking the qualities instilled in the horse here and learning how to transfer them successfully to riding.  If there is no round yard available, then starting with groundwork will still be appropriate.
