Hidden Impact of Menopause on Equestrian Life

It is super significant!

In this webinar, Dr. Shelley Appleton sheds light on the hidden impacts of hormonal changes, peri-menopause, and menopause—because, let’s face it, it’s about time someone explained why riding confidence and enthusiasm for horses seem to disappear at strangely the same time as your hormones cause havoc!

Before launching Calm Willing Confident Horses, Dr. Appleton spent 25 years in the pharmacy field as a university academic at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. With this background, she’s well-equipped to talk about how hormones affect everything from proprioception to insulin resistance—and no, it’s not just a fancy excuse for feeling like you’ve turned into an overly cautious, slightly neurotic, avoider of horse-riding. It’s real!

In this session, she shares insights that might just make attendees go, “Ah, so that’s why I’m not riding like I used to!” Here’s what some participants have already learned:

  • How hormonal changes are linked to proprioception and confidence, not just on horseback but in life. (Turns out, the physical shifts in our body are actually real and not just “getting older”).
  • The anxiety, fear of injury, and even weight gain can be tied to hormonal shifts and insulin resistance—so it’s not just you blaming yourself every time you hesitate to ride.
  • Practical ideas for getting things back on track, like adjusting your diet (yes, gluten-free and low-carb), tracking glucose levels, and exploring integrative health care. Spoiler alert: You can feel better, and it doesn’t involve jumping on the antidepressant train immediately.
  • A comforting realisation that, surprise!—you’re not alone in feeling like your body has started acting up like it’s auditioning for a bad soap opera. And most importantly, you can do something about it.

If you're ready to finally understand what's really going on, Dr. Appleton will point you to the right resources, health experts, and support to help you regain that sense of confidence and joy with your horse again.

Glad to Know I am Not Mad!

Annie, Foster NSW

Thank you! It was very good, and I'm glad to know I was not going mad. Next step to work out how to not gain weight. At least I am now inspired it can be done.

Feeling Validated

Rebekah, Narrogin WA

I loved the webinar last night. A lot of it sounds like me. I went to my GP for a blood test to see why I was feeling that way. The GP said no way you’re 38 you can’t be, and that I am just depressed and need anti depressants. I feel validated I refused and I am going to see someone for a second opinion.

Such a Valuable Discussion

Kate, Bullsbrook WA

Thanks so much for holding this Shelley, it is such a valuable discussion. 45 and gaining weight yet I exercise and eating hadn't changed. I have tried two doctors both have been no help with the issue because my BMI is not yet high enough!
